About us

Tynedale Harriers and Athletic Club was formed in the late 1970s by a group of local runners passionate about their sport. Some of the founding members are still active within the club. Tynedale Harriers is an inclusive club. We help newer athletes learn the ropes of athletics but also involve more experienced helping any new member join in the sport. The club is about a healthy competitive drive, motivating and helping people push past any mental barriers, developing fitness and resilience to keep going even when faced with a challenge.

We are based in Hexham, at Wentworth Leisure Centre athletics track, an excellent facility we’re lucky to have here in Tynedale.

  • The aims and abilities of our members varies widely, from ‘social runners’ to a few who compete at a very high level regionally, nationally and even internationally.
  • We also promote a lively social side with handicap races, ‘pub runs’, an annual dinner, weekends away and various other events.
  • The club is run by a Committee – and we’re always looking for new volunteers to join us.
  • Interested in joining as a member? Please read our membership page for more information.
  • Wanting to compete competitively for the club? You’ll need an official club vest to wear at events.

In general our club training nights are Tuesday and Thursday.

  • Juniors train from 6pm to 7pm, with some specialist training at other times.
  • Seniors train from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesdays in four groups of varying ability and on Thursdays 7pm to 8pm on the track.

For juniors, we have a great team of qualified UK Athletics coaches, where we cover sprints, endurance running, jumps, hurdling and throwing. New juniors are invited to attend induction sessions, which are an opportunity for them to see if they are definitely interested in joining and for the coaches to find out about the athlete’s strengths and interests. Find out more on the membership page.

Tynedale Harriers & Athletic Club was one of twelve clubs in the region and amongst the first 100 in the country to be awarded the Club Mark Accreditation from England Athletics & Sport England. This is awarded to clubs that are committed to providing quality coaching in a safe and child friendly environment for children, young people, their parents, carers and those with an interest in the sport.
