There are easier ways to welcome in the New Year but Bev Redfern and Rachel Chinnery chose to do it by running through mud, rain and wind for over 5 hours when they decided to complete the Hardmoors 30 Ultramarathon on January 1st. This is a 30-ish mile loop around Whitby including Robin Hoods Bay, Ravenscar and Cloughton.
Over 1500m of climb in total and very wet conditions made the going tough in places especially on stretches of the Cleveland Way where the mud got everywhere. Bev even got her ears full of it, what with all the slipping, sliding and falling down that was going on during a 12 mile stretch between Whitby and Ravenscar.
Runners have 9 hours to complete the route and both Tynedale runners did themselves proud. Rachel was 11th overall and first lady in 5 hours 3 minutes. Bev was only a minute behind and second lady in 5 hours 4 minutes.
Bev ran consistently well throughout the race but Rachel slowed up dramatically towards the end, somehow managing to hang on. She then realised she had run the whole race on four jelly babies! So much for all that BG training; she must try to engage her brain next time round. Well done both women.
