We had a good turn out from Tynedale Harriers at this years Northern U17 and Senior Indoor Championships. The Championships were held at the English Institute of Sport, Sheffield on the 16th/17th January.
On the morning of Day 1 the highlight was the 400m. Lea Stephenson and Darren Towart both ran PB’s in fast heats. Darren ran 53.20 secs knocking over a second off his previous PB. Lea ran 50.92 secs in the heat and 50.74 secs in the Semi Finals. Lea was very unlucky to miss out on a Final place by 1 tenth of a second!
Darren went on to run 7.82 in the Heats of the 60m.
Liam Collins represented Tynedale with a run of 8.27 secs in the 60m Hurdles. He finished in 2nd Place but because he chose to have the hurdles at Masters height the result excluded him from the medals.
Adam Pratt was the last of the Seniors to race. Adam finished 4th in the 1500m Heats just 25 hundredths of a second behind the three qualifying athletes.
The U17 Mens 1500m was a straight final. Max Pearson went into the race defending the title he won last year. He ran the race tactically, staying with the pack. It was physical at times with some elbows flying. Max split the pack with a kick at 400m and kicked again at 200m to finish the race 20 metres ahead of silver medallist, Cheshire’s Harry Simpson, in a time of 4:17.95.
Day 2 brought mixed fortunes for our Senior runners. Darren ran in the 200m with legs still heavy from yesterdays PB performance. He finished in a time of 24.72. Lea finished 2nd in his heat (23.6 secs), qualifying comfortably for the semi finals. In the Semi Finals Lea had another good run (23.63) but was unable to make the final.
Adam tried to improve on yesterday’s 1500m performance in the 800m. He qualified for the Semi Finals and missed out on the Final by 7 Hundredths of a second. He ran an indoor PB in a very impressive 1:59.61.
Great to see the hard winter training paying off for our athletes.
