Indoors over the border

McCain Scottish National Open Indoor Athletics
Emirates Arena. Glasgow
19th January 2012

Despite the competing interests of road and cross country there was no shortage of interest in the Scottish Open indoor athletics meeting at the magnificent new Emirates Arena in the east of Glasgow on Saturday 19th January. Built with the Commonwealth Games in mind and with a state of the art velodrome next door the arena was home to an entry of over 600 athletes in over 100 graded races and a full programme of indoor field events.

Two Tynedale athletes made the short trip northwards and both returned impressed with the facilities on offer. Adam Pratt and Jonny Currie raced over 800m with Adam graded in the second of 29 heats and Jonny in the third race. Adam committed himself to the fast early pace and although he lost ground in the final 200m circuit he was not far off his indoor best with a 2minutes 01.47 seconds clocking. Still only 16, Jonny had his eye on another attempt at the so-far elusive 2 minute barrier. In a competitive race he positioned himself well and took the lead approaching the bell. Although overhauled on the final lap he still finished a close second just outside his recent PB with 2minutes 01.09 seconds.

Jonny was back for more later in the day in heat 3 of the 1500m but finished a few seconds outside his best with 4minutes 23.71 seconds.

Both athletes hope to return to Glasgow for the Scottish Indoor Championships in early March.
