Morton Stadium, Santry Park, Dublin (July 11th 2015)
Dublin’s iconic Morton Stadium in the north of the city was the venue for the Irish Miler’s Clubs premier event of the season so far. Among the handful of UK athletes who crossed the Irish Sea to compete was Tynedale junior Jonny Currie.
Despite the strong fields assembled from amongst the cream of Irish distance running talent, a blustery wind looked like it might put paid to any fast times. Nonetheless some fine racing was in prospect and Jonny was drawn in the 3rd heat of six quality 800m races. Lining up in lane 6 in the field of 10 he placed himself confidently behind the early leaders as he passed the bell in a shade over 56 seconds. Strong running in the third quarter of the race saw five runners go clear with Jonny still keenly in contention, looking ready to make a move. Coming wide off the final bend Jonny struck decisively entering the home straight and held off all-comers for a fine victory. His time too was a bonus as the clock stopped in a new personal best of 1m 54.33s.
