Inter-Counties Cross Country Championships
Cofton Park, Birmingham
8th March 2014
The inter-counties championships is the traditional climax to the cross-country season and whilst some of the lustre has been taken off the senior races now that they no longer determine selection for the World Championships team, nonetheless competition in the juniors races is as hot as ever.
This year Tynedale Harriers have an unprecedented five athletes representing the region and for most this will be their first appearance in a televised event. Competition for places is always tough as the north-east region includes not only Northumberland but also Cleveland and County Durham. Selection is based on results from the North-East Counties championships in December and from the Northern Championships, held last week near Liverpool.
Ellen Rickets caps an excellent season with selection for the u13 girls team – much deserved reward after her excellent 20th place finish in the mud of Liverpool’s Knowsley Park last week. Four boys will wear the distinctive yellow jersey with the rainbow hoops. Jonny Currie makes up for his disappointment at missing out on selection as an u17 last year and earns a place in the u20 team. Max Pearson and Matthew Jackson will run in the u15 event and Charles Downs will debut in the u13 race.
