ESAA Track & Field Championships

This year was the 85th English Schools Track and Field Championships. This year and next the championships are hosted by Northumberland and held at Gateshead International Stadium.

Five of our Junior athletes were in action. Ellen Ricketts competed in the Junior Girls 800m. Ellen finished 8th in her heat with a strong and determined finish. It was an amazingly strong field. The eventual winner, Tilly Simpson of Derby, ran an new championship record and a new all time record of 2:06.22. A phenomenal time for a Junior Girl. The Junior Boys 800m was an equally competitive event. Alex Wood narrowly missed out on a place in the final, finishing in 3rd place in his heat. A superb achievement for his first taste of big Championship competition. Ellis Leonard competed in the Junior Boys High Jump.

Max Pearson competed in his first year as an Inter Boy in the 1500m. Max ran a great heat, finishing in 4th place and qualifying automatically for the final. He was the only year 10 athlete to make it to the final. Max finished 10th in a very tactical and at times physical race.

Jack Colmer took part in the Inter Boys Triple Jump. Again the competition was fierce. English Schools is definitely a hot bed of the best athletes in the country. Jack, carrying an injury sustained the previous week, rose to the occasion and recorded a PB of 13m. He finished in 8th place overall.

With Northumberland hosting the event it was a fantastic opportunity for local school children to take part. Sarah Jackson and Audrey Mills were spotted on medal bearing duties. During the Athletes Parade Jack was chosen to carry the Northumberland flag and Max had the honour of leading all the athletes out carrying the English Schools banner.

Nice to see Hugh and Steph Bingham officiating too.

Well done to you all.
