A Sunday evening in mid-December has traditionally been a night to celebrate the sporting successes and personalities of the year and last Sunday, December 15 2013 was just such an occasion. It was, of course, the night of the annual Sport Tynedale Awards at Wentworth Leisure Centre.
Tynedale Harriers were nominated in three categories. The under 17 cross-country team who won the North East Harrier League 2012-13 title were nominated for Youth Team of the Year, Max Pearson capped an honour-strewn season by being nominated in the Young Sportsman of the Year category and Peter Venus, who led these young athletes to such success, was short-listed for the Coach of the Year award. Several Tynedale athletes were also members of the all-conquering Hexham Middle School athletics team who were chosen as Middle School Team of the Year.
As the evening began and the nominations were announced it became apparent that Tynedale is an area of outstanding talent across a range of sports and that simply to be short-listed was a considerable achievement. The under 17 boys and Max were in good company, certainly deserved their certificates of merit and were not in the least disappointed to miss out on the top awards.
Peter’s achievements over the last few seasons will be well known to all club members as he has quietly established himself as one of the leading endurance coaches in the region. His young squads work hard under thoughtful supervision and were prominent across all age categories. They won a hatful of titles and representative honours and were a credit to him. The applause was therefore loud and well-deserved as Peter stepped onto the podium to receive his trophy. A great way to mark his success and commitment.
The evening was sponsored by SCA Hygiene in Prudhoe meaning that first prize in the raffle was a year’s supply of premium toilet tissue with free samples for all nominees. An inspired choice to sponsor the event as the samples were the table and conversational centre-pieces of the evening.
