The main cross country event through the season is the North East Harrier League (NEHL). This is a series of six races running from October through to March. Clubs gain points based on the finishing positions of their athletes (first six to count for senior men, first four for the women). A handicap system is used, with fast and slow packs giving everyone the chance to be competitive.
NEHL league matches 2017-18:
30th September – Wrekenton
8th October – Druridge Bay
28th October – Sherman Cup – Temple Park (South Shields)
18th November – Aykley Heads, Durham
6th January – Herrington Country Park, Sunderland
10th February – Thornley Farm, Durham
3rd March – Alnwick
All fixtures still provisional, but should be OK
The club pays for your entry so you have a free run in the countryside – how good is that!
Races are handicapped, with the top 10% finishers in senior races promoted to the medium or fast packs.
In addition to the Harrier League are the North East Cross Country Championships and Northern Cross Country Championships. These are both ‘one off’ events, with no handicap.
9th December – North Eastern – Redcar
27th January – Northerns – Leeds
24th February – Nationals, London
