About us

Tynedale Harriers and Athletic Club was formed in the late 1970s by a group of local runners passionate about their sport. Some of the founder members are still active within the club. We’re currently looking to put together a history of the club – if you have any stories to share, please get in touch.

The club is based in Hexham, at Wentworth Leisure Centre athletics track, an excellent facility we’re lucky to have here in Tynedale.

  • The aims and abilities of our members varies widely, from ‘social runners’ to a few who compete at a very high level regionally, nationally and even internationally.
  • We also have a lively social side with handicap races, ‘pub runs’, an annual dinner, weekends away and various other events.
  • The club is run by a committee – and we’re always looking for new faces to join us – it’s not as onerous as you might think, and there’s often cake involved.
  • If you’re interested in joining, come along to one of the club sessions or fill in the forma on the ‘Join us page. Then if you want to compete for the club you’ll want a club vest.

The club training nights are Tuesday and Thursday. Juniors train from 6pm to 7pm on both nights, with some specialist training at other times. Seniors train from 7pm to 8pm on Tuesdays in four groups of varying ability. We hope to develop the training provision for seniors further in the coming months. Some Seniors also meet on Thursdays from 7pm and for informal runs at weekends – please ask someone at a Tuesday session about this.

For juniors, we have a great team of qualified UK Athletics coaches. We cover sprints, endurance running, jumps, hurdling and throwing. New juniors are invited to attend two induction sessions, which are an opportunity for them to see if they are definitely interested in joining and for the coaches to find out about the athlete’s strengths and interests. Find out more on the ‘Join us’ page.

Tynedale Harriers & Athletic Club was one of twelve clubs in the region and amongst the first 100 in the country to be awarded the Club Mark Accreditation from England Athletics & Sport England. This is awarded to clubs that are committed to providing quality coaching in a safe and child friendly environment for children, young people, their parents, carers and those with an interest in the sport. We are currently in the process of upgrading this accreditation.
